I'm delighted to announce that 'Legacy of the Ripper', the sequel to A Study in Red - The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper was today released in its e-book edition by Double Dragon Publishing and is available from http://www.double-dragon-ebooks.com/single.php?ISBN=1-55404-689-0 The paperback edition will follow soon.

About the book:

Jack Thomas Reid, nephew of Robert Cavendish who first appeared in A Study in Red – The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper languishes in the secure Ravenswood Psychiatric Hospital, sentenced to confinement ‘at Her Majesty’s Pleasure’ for a series of apparent ‘Jack the Ripper’ copycat killings in the picturesque English coastal resort of Brighton. Jack’s defence at his trial, that he is a descendant of Jack the Ripper and that the crimes were conducted by an unknown ‘mystery man’ and that Jack was drugged and made to appear as the killer was regarded as so preposterous and unbelievable that his sentence was never in doubt. When one of the policemen who conducted the original investigation into the murders begins to doubt the truth of the case against Reid, Sergeant Carl Wright and Ripperologist Alice Nickels begin an investigation into his story. What they find is told through the voice of Doctor Ruth Truman, Jack’s psychiatrist at Ravenswood, and through a series of events that take place as far afield as the beautiful island of Malta and in Warsaw, Poland. Slowly but surely and with the help of Wright’s boss Inspector Mike Holland, the link between the events that shocked and terrorised Whitechapel over a century ago, and their link with the case of Jack Thomas Reid and the ‘Legacy of Jack the Ripper’ is revealed.

A Study in Red – The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper was the winner of The Preditors & Editors ‘Best Thriller Novel of 2008 Award’ and is available from Double Dragon Publishing, Amazon and all good retailers.

My bees were scaring my characters but I think they'll be their salvation in the end.

Bring on the bees! I need a swarm of them for my garden!

Very nice Brian. Two great reviews, and one already anticipating the Legacy. Cool!

I'm over the moon to be able to report two more fantastic reader reviews for 'A Study in Red' on the site of Amazon.com These come just as the edits for 'Legacy of the Ripper' the sequel to the first book have been completed. I'm really grateful that people are still reading and enjoying the book and taking the time to add their own thoughts on it in this way. Here are the two new reviews:

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bone Chilling Read for Any Ripper Fan, June 19, 2009
By Diana Rubino "Historical and Paranormal Author" (Cape Cod, Massachusetts, United States)

Robert Cavendish is a psychiatrist who's inherited a package of papers which belonged to his great grandfather, a doctor. As he begins reading, he sees that it's a diary of sorts, and he's astonished to see that the diary mentions Jack the Ripper. He reads on, becoming convinced that this diary actually belonged to the never-apprehended serial killer himself, who brutally murdered several prostitutes in London's East End in 1888.
The diary's author goes into explicit detail about how he killed and butchered each of his victims, further disturbing and troubling Robert as he reads his great grandfather's chilling commentary interspersed throughout--he actually knew this killer!
The book ends in a surprising twist which also leaves the story open for the much-anticipated sequel which I eagerly await.
Author Brian Porter's extensive research on Jack and his explorations of the killer's motives shine on every page of this story that is impossible to put down. For the merely curious and the seasoned Ripperologist alike, A Study in Red is all at once entertaining, suspenseful, and downright creepy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jeepers Creepers, June 13, 2009
By D. Thorne (Bartlett, TN United States)

Creepy, thoughtful, creative. I don't know which captivated me more, learning the details of Jack the Ripper's crimes, or wondering what was going to happen to the narrator. A great twist on an old, but always fascinating moment in history.

At least I know where some of the shadows are now. My dreams are invaded by whatever happens to fall into my subconscious or out as the case may be ... I have to admit I've had some odd dreams lately. Could be the meds. :-)

Bees? I have to force myself to watch bee things on television because the little darlings unnerve me a bit. What's the novel about, Sheila? Are the bees the torment factor? Give us the buzz.

My dreams are invaded by bees, but that's something to do with the novel I'm working on.

My favorite villian is Alan Rickman, he was the bad guy on Quigley Down Under and in Die Hard, both superb performances by him.

I also think that Gene Hackman is one of the all time bad guys, although he's played the lead in some movies. Remember how mean he was in "Unforgiven", Eastwood movie. Or "The Quick and the Dead." GOSH I hated the man. And Poisiden Adventure, where he's the sarcastic preacher that leads them to life. Man was he ever good at being ugly.
Love and blessings
